Schumer ‘troubled’ by pace of Russia probe under Senate GOP

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday criticized Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr for the slow pace of the ongoing investigation into Russia’s alleged involvement in the 2016 election.

Speaking at the weekly press conference for Senate Democratic leaders, Schumer said that the committee’s investigation has gone “very, very slowly” under Burr’s leadership and that he is leaning on Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the ranking member on the committee, to speed things up.

“I have a great deal of confidence in Sen. Warner, who has been pushing very hard,” Schumer said. “The last few weeks, things have moved very, very slowly under Chairman Burr’s leadership, and I’m a little troubled about it.”

“I’ll give Sen. Warner some time and credence to try and work those things out. But things have moved too slowly for my taste and a lot of the members of the committee’s taste,” Schumer said.

The Senate Democratic leader has been a proponent of an independent probe into Russian involvement in November’s election, which has been a constant talking point of many on the Democratic side of the aisle, as well as some Republicans.

A spokesperson for Burr did not respond to a request for comment.
