Walter Reed contractor gets three years for kickbacks
A Walter Reed contracting official was sentenced to more than three years in prison for taking bribes.

From 1998 to 2003, Kevin R. Roach, 48, of Fredericksburg, Va., steered tree maintenance and moving services contracts worth up to $2.2 million to Platinum Contractors, in Silver Spring.
Platinum’s owners agreed to kick back 10 percent of the contract payments to Roach. Roach also got a $30,000 Ford F-150 pickup truck to use for free, while Louis Pisani Jr.’s Platinum Contractors paid $16,000 in insurance premiums and loan payments on the truck, according to prosecutors.
Man dies in Montgomery County shooting
A man was killed in a police-involved shooting outside a Germantown apartment early Wednesday.
Montgomery County police were responding to a 911 hang-up call on the 12200 block of Eagle’s Nest Court, according to the police department. One or two of the patrol officers fired their weapons. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A gun and a knife were found near his body, police said. Police do not believe that the man killed himself.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave while the death is investigated.
Woman gets year in prison for moonshine ring
A 58-year-old Virginia woman has been sentenced to a year in prison for her role in an illegal moonshine operation.
Margaret Smith owned the Halifax County property where the moonshine was made and was the bookkeeper for the operations, federal prosecutors said.
U.S. District Judge James Turk said Smith “had to know what was going on,” The Roanoke Times reported.
Driver charged after tanker truck overturns
The driver of a tanker truck that overturned on the Capital Beltway and shut down the Inner Loop during rush hour Wednesday morning was charged with reckless driving, Virginia police said.
The tractor-trailer was traveling westbound near Van Dorn Street in Alexandria when the driver veered into the right emergency shoulder, striking a disabled vehicle and tow truck, police say. George Dawson III, 29, of Baltimore, was charged with reckless driving.
