WATCH: Johnny Depp makes Moon Man appearance at MTV Video Music Awards

Johnny Depp made a cameo appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday, drawing a mixed reaction from fans.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s face was digitally projected onto the MTV network mascot, the Moon Man.

“Guess who? #VMAs,” Depp wrote in sharing the video of himself on Instagram, joking he “needed the work.”

Depp further poked fun at himself, saying, “I just want you guys to know I’m available for birthdays, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes — any old thing you need.”

The VMAs appearance marks the first time a major network has supported Depp since his high-profile defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Many were thrilled with Depp’s appearance.

“Everything JD does is legendary,” a fan commented on Instagram. “King JD is back.”

Another asked, “Can I please book you for my birthday in November?”

“He wasn’t even nominated, but Johnny Depp won the #VMAs,” a fan wrote on Twitter

Depp’s appearance, however, drew the ire of others.

Kathy Griffin called Depp “so gross.”

“Hopefully he doesn’t poop on the audience like he pooped in that bed,” Griffin added in a response to editor Marlow Stern, who also called Depp’s appearance “so weird.”

In June, a Fairfax, Virginia, jury found that Heard defamed Depp in a 2018 op-ed.

The jury also found that Depp defamed Heard via a statement made by his former lawyer, Adam Waldman. Heard was subsequently awarded $2 million in damages.

The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Because the trial took place in Virginia, however, the punitive damages Heard must pay were dropped to a maximum of $350,000, reducing Depp’s total to $10,350,000.
