Leaked documents show Charles and David Koch intend to spend $889 million leading up to the 2016 elections – both presidential and congressional — that would render them almost as, if not more, powerful than the official Republican Party.
The spending figure would more than double the $404 million the Republican National Committee spent during the 2012 presidential cycle. The RNC spent $188 million during the 2014 midterm elections.
The $889 million amount was shared at the Koch network’s annual winter donor meeting Monday at the Ritz-Carlton in Rancho Mirage, Calif., an attendee told Politico.
The Koch brothers expect to raise the money from a network of a few hundred donors who attend the biannual meetings like Monday’s in California, referred to as “seminars.”
“For that kind of money, you could buy yourself a president. Oh, right. That’s the point,” Mark McKinnon, a veteran GOP operative, told Politico of the $889 million goal.
