Elitist familiarity of San Francisco mayor breeds contempt

San Francisco Mayor London Breed is certainly not the first Democrat to be caught violating her own draconian COVID-19 rules. But she might be the first to respond to the controversy by telling the truth.

When confronted, Breed said she did not care about any mask rules and that she was more worried about enjoying herself. At a time when COVID-19 deaths are at their highest levels since February, Breed prioritized her entertainment over the COVID-19 threat level.

“I got up and started dancing because I was feeling the spirit, and I wasn’t thinking about a mask,” Breed said.

She had forbidden people from holding large family gatherings. And of course, ordinary people caught in such an act would face ejections and fines. Such double standards have been causing tension in the country for months.

San Francisco’s most recent mandate, which took effect on Sept. 10, orders that “everyone, including people who are fully vaccinated, must wear a well-fitted mask in indoor public settings.” People are permitted to remove their masks only when “actively eating or drinking,” and must put the mask back on between bites or sips. Moreover, it states that “people are urged to be seated at a table or positioned at a stationary counter or place while eating or drinking.”

Breed, who was attending the reunion of the 1990s R&B group Tony! Toni! Tone!, reportedly flouted her own mask mandates the entire evening. Naturally, many people were angry over the videos of Breed. They should be.

Either COVID-19 is a severe, deadly pandemic that requires everyone to obey draconian rules, or it isn’t. Breed doesn’t get to have it both ways, imposing draconian restrictions upon others while “feeling the spirit” herself. Surely she doesn’t think she’s the only one who enjoys a good time.
