Prep’s Malphrus makes U-19 national lax team

Recent Georgetown Prep graduate Bray Malphrus was named to the U.S. Lacrosse under-19 national team, announced Monday. Malphrus, a defender bound for the University of Virginia, will play in the International Lacrosse Federation U-19 World Championship next summer in British Columbia and will be joined by his high school coach, Kevin Giblin, who will serve as an assistant to head coach Chuck Apel (Bridgewater, N.J.).

Malphrus was selected from a pool of 120 players who tried out at UMBC, Thursday-Sunday. Others from the Washington area selected for the try out were Ryan Shuler (Georgetown Prep), Kevin Ridgway (Georgetown Prep), Derek Styer (Georgetown Prep), Matt Kugler (Robinson), Mark White (St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes), Connor Reilly (Landon), Matt Kawanoto (West Springfield) and Ian Crumley (St. Albans).

Malphrus is the only Washington-area player on the 23-man team. Five players from the Baltimore area made the squad — Tim Donovan (Loyola), Steele Stanwick (Loyola), Taylor Fiorito (McDonogh), Nick Elsmo (Severn) and Peter Fallon (Gilman).

Maxey is the new AD at RM

Bob Maxey is the new athletic director at Richard Montgomery High. Maxey takes over for longtime Rockets’ AD Leo Campion, who has retired. Maxey was baseball coach at Magruder for three seasons before stepping down after the 2006 season.

O’Connor takes over DeMatha baseball

DeMatha graduate Sean O’Connor is the new baseball coach at his alma mater, replacing the man he played for and coached under, Charlie Sullivan.

O’Connor, a 1994 graduate of the Hyattsville private school, played at Western Maryland, then returned to DeMatha in 1999 as an assistant.

In his 24 years, Sullivan won 515 games and 14 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference titles. DeMatha went 20-10 this spring, advancing to the WCAC semifinals.
