A member of the Islamic militant group Hezbollah, which many say is a terrorist organization, views as a “victory” the tentative agreement reached by U.S. and other powers with Iran.
The Jerusalem Post reported that a Hezbollah member of the Lebanese parliament, Nawar Sahli, said the agreement makes Iran “a member of the nuclear club,” citing the English-language Lebanese paper the Daily Star.
“We hope the agreement will have positive repercussions on security and stability in the region, even though Iran had said the nuclear issue was separate from regional conflicts,” Sahli said.
The Lebanese political system has been paralyzed and unable to elect a president for months, with some accusing Iran of directing Hezbollah to contribute to the hold-up.
Hezbollah is an Iranian-backed Shia group that has been aggressive toward Israel.
But it has also battled the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in Iraq.
Both Iran and Hezbollah have consistently been deemed as threats to the U.S., but the annual threat assessment presented to the Senate in February by James Clapper, director of national intelligence, omitted both this year, Newsweek reported.
