Rasmussen: Romney opens up huge lead in Florida

ORLANDO — A new survey from pollster Scott Rasmussen finds that Mitt Romney has doubled the size of his lead over Newt Gingrich in the last few days.  Romney now leads Gingrich 44 percent to 28 percent, Rasmussen says.

In Rasmussen’s most recent poll, just four days ago, Romney had an eight-point lead.

That 16-point lead is Romney’s largest of the campaign. Other polls showing Romney pulling away from Gingrich have found his lead to be in the neighborhood of eight percentage points.

Romney has shown signs of increasing momentum in the wake of two debates here in Florida, the first in Tampa on January 23 and the second in Jacksonville January 26.  Those debates were widely viewed as Gingrich’s chance to solidify the momentum he built with a solid win over Romney in the South Carolina.  By all accounts, Gingrich failed to do that, and lost ground to Romney in the process.

The Florida primary is next Tuesday, January 31.
