Marco Rubio defends Melania Trump after jacket flap

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., on Friday defended first lady Melania Trump from the “vicious treatment” she received from the public and media for a jacket she wore when boarding an airplane to meet with migrant children.

“I know for a FACT that @FLOTUS has been a strong voice of compassion for migrant children,” Rubio posted to Twitter. “The vicious treatment of her over the last day is a reminder of how Trump Derangement Syndrome, where hatred for him justifies everything, has become an epidemic. Totally lunacy everywhere!!!”

While boarding a plane to make a surprise visit on Thursday to a child migrant holding facility, Trump wore a jacket that said on the back, “I really don’t care, do u?” The jacket’s message caused backlash on social media.

When the first lady, an immigrant herself, exited the plane, she was wearing a different jacket.

“She wore a jacket boarding an aircraft. Nothing more. As evidenced by today’s visit, Mrs. Trump cares very deeply about all children,” Trump’s communications director Stephanie Grisham told the Washington Examiner.

“After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe,” Grisham said, according to a pool report.

Trump said her goal in visiting the center was to thank those working hard to keep it effective, and to see what she could do to help reunite children with their parents.
