‘He understood’: Biden says he spoke with Sanders about moving forward with vice president search

Joe Biden said he informed his 2020 Democratic presidential rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders that he is moving ahead with finding a running mate.

Sanders has yet to drop out of the race even after Biden became the presumptive nominee last month.

When the two spoke, Biden said he apologized to Sanders for moving forward in the process of selecting a vice presidential running mate, explaining that it takes “a lot of time.”

“It’s a bit presumptuous for me to be setting up a committee to go through the process … of deciding and doing the background checks on potential nominees. And I was apologizing to him by saying, ‘Bernie, I don’t want in any way — not in any way to demean your effort, but if we don’t start now, we’re not going to be able to get there.’ And he was very gracious. He said he understood,” Biden told ABC’s This Week on Sunday.

Biden said he did not ask Sanders for recommendations on who should be his running mate.
