Trump makes play for suburban voters with claim Biden would harm communities

President Trump charged that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would “destroy” suburban neighborhoods, a pitch aimed at stoking fear of what a Biden administration could hold for voters.

“The Suburban Housewives of America must read this article,” Trump said in a tweet on Thursday, sharing an article that criticized the former vice president’s affordable-housing policy. “Biden will destroy your neighborhood and your American Dream. I will preserve it, and make it even better!”

Trump’s appeal to the suburbs comes amid growing difficulties for the president, with most polls placing him behind Biden. This amounts to a double-digit gap in some cases, including in the president’s new home state of Florida.

In new television advertisements airing in key battleground states, the Trump campaign warns senior citizens that their lives will be at risk if Biden is elected. In broadcast interviews, Trump has charged that his opponent wants to ‘defund the police.’ In phone calls to supporters, Trump has said, “They want to destroy our suburbs.”

On Thursday, the White House announced a repeal of an Obama-era fair-housing rule, known as Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing. “The suburb destruction will end with us,” Trump said in a statement.

Preempting the move in remarks on the White House South Lawn last week, Trump said he would “protect the suburbs” by revisiting the rule. “People have worked all their lives to get into a community, and now they’re going to watch it go to hell,” Trump said at the time.
