The exit poll suggests a final result of around 39% for Newt Gingrich, 29% for Mitt Romney, 17% for Rick Santorum and 15% for Ron Paul. By way of comparison, the average of post-Monday-night-debate South Carolina polls was 33% for Gingrich, 28% for Romney, 12% for Santorum and 14% for Paul. Gingrich clearly got the late deciders, by a 44%-24% margin, but Santorum got 22% of their votes also—perhaps because of what I and some others considered his strong debate performance Thursday (I but not many others thought Romney did well; turns out I was wrong).
