A Suitland man was sentenced to more than a year in prison for an armed assault on U.S. Capitol police officers.

John Wesley Wheeler Jr., 30, pleaded guilty in March to one count of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers. He was sentenced to 16 months.

Police said a police officer in a marked car noticed Wheeler pacing back and forth, left and returned a few minutes later, then Wheeler charged across the street at the officer and pointed a gun at him.

The officer was able to move his car up the street. Two other Capitol Police officers arrived and ordered Wheeler to get on the ground. Instead, he pointed his weapon at the two officers, who shot him multiple times.
