Gunman killed after hostage situation in Texas

Police in Amarillo, Texas on Tuesday shot and killed a gunman who had taken hostages at a local Walmart Tuesday afternoon.

The Amarillo Police Department said the suspect is apparently dead and said on Twitter that, “hostages inside are safe.”


Amarillo Police Department had previously said on Twitter that its officers had engaged with an “armed subject” at the Walmart. The APD also said it had “not confirmed ANY gunshot victims and this appears to be a workplace violence type event.”

APD Officer Jeb Hilton had confirmed in a live broadcast on a local ABC affiliate that one gunman had taken at least one hostage. No other injuries have been reported and no other details have been made available.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area.
