An off-duty D.C. police officer who shot a person early Friday has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated.

Police said the officer got into a confrontation with five other people, including some of whom were transgendered, at around 5:25 a.m. at First and Pierce streets NW.

The officer discharged a handgun and one person was shot. Two other people involved in the incident sustained injuries. The nature of those injuries is under investigation to determine their cause.

Two transgendered people have been shot in the District this summer, including one who was killed.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier, who is trying to patch up her relationship with some members of the gay, lesbian and transgendered community, was on the scene of the shooting Friday morning.

The department did not immediately release the officer’s name.
