Freedom first to sign domestic picks

Who’s excited for MLS Combine 2009? I refuse to be pessimistic about what comes out of the next seven days for MLS as guys try to make their dreams come true. I clearly remember Chris Rolfe scoring his first career goal against D.C. United as an unheralded rookie in 2005 — he still had long hair then, and looked about 12 years old.

Anyway, some good news on the women’s side of things, the Washington Freedom is first WPS team to have signed its domestic picks from the WPS general draft back in October: No. 3 overall selection Becky Sauerbrunn, No. 17 pick Lori Lindsey No. 17, and No. 28 pick Emily Janss have all completed contracts. Conspicuously, No. 1 overall pick Sarah Huffman’s contract isn’t complete yet, but it should be soon, along with deals for the team’s international players.

Speaking of WPS, their college draft is also next week in St. Louis. Ten rounds! Makes my head spin. At the minimum times, we’re talking 5-6 hours. Ay caramba.
