On this day, June 8, in 1921, Babe Ruth was arrested for speeding and remained in jail until the Yankees game that day against the Red Sox had already started. Ruth, born George Herman Ruth in Baltimore, was the most colorful and charismatic player in baseball.

As a boy, Ruth got into trouble for chewing tobacco, drinking whiskey and skipping school. His parents enrolled him in St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, where he honed his baseball skills but kept his taste for tobacco, drink and mischievous behavior.

It wasn’t the first time Ruth got caught speeding. Ruth had his uniform delivered and dressed in his cell, paid a $100 fine, and rushed to the Polo Grounds in time for the sixth inning — helping to defeat Boston.
