Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said don’t blame him for the prominence of Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s background with Bain Capital as a campaign issue. Democrats would have run with it regardless of what he did, Gingrich said.
“There is nothing that they (the Democrats) used against him that
required me to show it to them,” he told the Examiner. The one-time Romney rival had run ads attacking him on it during the GOP primary.
Asked if bringing up the Bain issue in the primary give the Romney campaign an
early shot at fashioning a response to later Democratic attacks, Gingrich responded, “I think the Romney people thought that.”
He added that he thinks the whole issue has only had a minor effect in the presidential race.
“I don’t think the Bain issue is a primary factor in where they are at
right now. I think it has been part of a general assault, but I don’t
think it has been key to that,” he said.
