Former Mount Rainier officer indicted on 12 counts

A grand jury indicted a former Mount Rainier police officer on 12 counts Monday, including attempted murder and sexual assault.

Gene Gillette, 27, a three-and-a-half year veteran of the force, faces multiple charges for his role in a Capitol Heights shooting on July 2.

According to police at the time of the shooting, Gillette got into an altercation while off-duty in what officials then called a failed carjacking on the 700 block of Glacier Avenue.

Gillette faces charges including attempted murder, voluntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and three counts of sexual assault.

Prince George’s County police arrested Gillette on Monday.

“We don’t take lightly our responsibility to enforce the law – even against a law enforcer – no one is above the law,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a statement. “My office will vigorously prosecute this case.”

Gillette could face up to life in prison, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
