The best and worst of … play-by-play announcers

The late Curt Gowdy once told me “That fans never watch a sporting event on television because of a broadcaster.”

But as someone who is paid to watch television, it’s my duty to rank who I feel are the best — and worst — announcers.

BEST

1. Jim Nantz, CBS: He is perhaps the most versatile and best overall broadcaster in the business. Nantz, who replaced Pat Summerall, handles golf, the NFL and NCAA college basketball — all with a touch of class. Nantz is never bigger than the event and never seems to have an day night.

2. Mike Tirico, ESPN/ABC: Like Nantz, Tirico is a versatile broadcaster with Monday Night Football, the NBA and PGA golf on his plate. He is consistently solid and a close second to Nantz.

3. Dick Enberg, CBS: Yes, he has lost a little off his fastball, but he still is one of the best. The eloquent Enberg carries a full load with NFL, NCAA basketball and all four Grand Slams for ESPN. In a time when people his age — a young 73 — are slowing down Enberg, still is at the top of his game.

4. Verne Lundquist, CBS: He still is that smooth, solid voice of golf and college basketball, but it is Southeastern Conference football that his signature sport. He does an outstanding job week after week telling stories and handling the play by play duties for the best football conference in the land.

5. Tom Hammond, NBC: I asked 10 national broadcasters who they like to listen to and Hammond shows up on all the ballots. Hammonds handles Notre Dame football, coverage of the Triple Crown races and the Olympics. It is his relaxed style and ability to capture the story lines that makes him so well respected among his peers.

WORST

1. Chris Berman, ESPN/ABC: This is painful because I like Berman. He is a great show host and does a super job on the Sunday ESPN NFL program. But his baseball and golf nicknames makes it painful to listen to him. Boomer, I am begging you stick to the studio where you are a star.

2. Mark Jackson, ESPN/ABC: It seems that the suits at ESPN are in love with Jackson, who we get most weeks during ACC football season. He exhibits over the top exuberance and just does not call a consistent game.

3. Chris Fowler, ESPN/ABC: Fowler is a very good studio host but is a sub-par play-by-play man. He is their No. 1 guy on their Thursday Night College football game, but would be better served back at the studio.

4. Craig Bollerjack, CBS: He does college basketball and NFL football. I really know the Ravens are a sub .500 team when he calls their game.

5. Matt Vasgersian, FOX: He is one of those “you would know him if you saw him guys.” He does Major League Baseball on FOX, the NFL on FOX, the Orange Bowl on FOX and the Olympics on NBC. For the life of me I can name 10 guys who are better, yet he continues to get some of the best assignments.
