Christmas sweaters just got political

Politics has infiltrated Christmas sweaters.

Legendary rapper and producer Nas is making political Christmas sweaters, including one showing Santa Claus, who is portrayed as both black and white, kneeling in his signature red outfit.

The kneeling Santa is an ode to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who began kneeling during the national anthem in a preseason NFL game this year to protest racial inequality and police brutality against minorities.

Other NFL players followed in his footsteps — 11 total in the first week of the season — in various ways, including some who raised a fist. Raising fists in the air during the national anthem is an ode to the Black Lives Matter movement, which began after a string of police killings of black men.

According to the HSTRY website, a portion of the proceeds from the sweater will go to the Center for Court Innovation, “which seeks to help create a more effective and humane justice system, reducing both crime and incarceration.”

On his Instagram, Nas called the Center for Court Innovation a nonprofit for criminal justice reform.

The sweater is available online for $45 in red, green and black.
