Conservative PAC: Polling favors Gary Palmer in Alabama Senate race

The influential conservative political action committee Club for Growth Action released the results of a poll Wednesday showing strong support for Rep. Gary Palmer in the Republican primary for Alabama’s 2020 senate seat.

In the statement, the group hailed Palmer’s record of limited government and fiscal responsibility throughout his tenure in Congress while hitting out against “fake politician” Rep. Bradley Byrne who announced his run for the seat on Wednesday.

The internal poll shows Palmer, who has yet to announce his candidacy, as the favored option over Byrne among voters who know both congressmen, 57 percent to 26 percent respectively. The numbers show “a real conservative will win the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Alabama,” said CFGA president David McIntosh in the statement. “That individual is not Congressman Bradley Byrne.”

The winner of the GOP primary will face the incumbent, Democratic Sen. Doug Jones. First elected in the 2017 special election, Jones is running as the only Democrat for a first full term.

The poll consisting of 500 likely Republican voters was conducted by WAP Intelligence and commissioned directly by CFGA. The telephone interviews were conducted between Feb. 10-12 and has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify that Club for Growth Action has not endorsed any candidate in the Alabama 2020 Senate seat race.
