More Americans side with Trudeau than Trump on trade: Poll

A majority of Americans side with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on trade policy over President Trump, according to a new poll.

A Global News/Ipsos poll found that 57 percent of Americans approve of how Trudeau is managing the recent trade dispute while only 37 percent approve of Trump’s handling.

The U.S. and Canadian leaders have been at odds since Trump imposed hefty tariffs on a number of countries, including Canada, as part of his promise to protect American business. However, both Americans and Canadians overwhelmingly agree this move has impacted the close relationship between the two nations.

Seventy-one percent of Americans and 81 percent of Canadians agree this has damaged relations between the neighboring countries while only 29 percent of Americans and 28 percent of Canadians don’t believe the trade dispute has a damaging effect.

These new numbers come just one week after the two leaders clashed during the G-7 summit over the imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and members of the European Union.

The online survey of 1,005 Americans took place between June 12-14 and has a +/- 3.5 percent margin of error.
