BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard’s Buffalo sector is unveiling new technology designed to better locate boaters and other mariners in distress.
Coast Guard officials say the new Rescue 21 search-and-rescue communications system was created to more efficiently locate vessels and sailors who encounter problems on the water.

The Coast Guard is holding a news conference late Wednesday morning at its Buffalo station on the Lake Erie waterfront to see a demonstration of the new system and hear about how the updated technology is aiding search-and-rescue missions from Lake Erie to the St. Lawrence River.
Officials will also demonstrate for the media the Buffalo sector’s new 45-foot response boat. Coast Guard officials say the vessel is faster than boats of similar size and can maneuver in shallower water.
