MontCo councilman: Federal dollars ease traffic concerns

Thanks to an influx of federal dollars, traffic will be really bad — as opposed to nightmarish — when thousands of military workers relocate to Bethesda this fall, according to a Montgomery County Council member.

“Everyone knows that this particular portion of our community is already in gridlock,” said Councilman Roger Berliner, D-Potomac/Bethesda. “Doubling the number of trips in an area already choking on traffic could be a potential nightmare.  These federal dollars will ease our communities concerns and allow us to welcome our wounded warriors and their families without reservation.”

Speaking at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland Sens. Barbara Mikulski and  Benjamin Cardin announced Monday more than $300 million in federal funds to alleviate traffic concerns around the facility.

The funding was included in the last-minute budget deal struck by Congress for the rest of this fiscal year, and will pay for improvements to nearby roads, including Maryland 355 and upgrades to the Medical Center Metro station.
