D.C. firefighters win grant to fix faulty alarms

The District’s firefighters and emergency medical personnel won a $125,000 federal grant to examine residential fire alarms and fix or replace faulty systems.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services will purchase 6,000 new fire alarms with the money, Fire Chief Dennis Rubin said. Firefighters already have begun canvassing neighborhoods in Northeast — where the city’s most recent residential fire ocurred on East Capitol Street — to check and install new fire alarms. District residents can request a free smoke detector examination or new alarm by calling 311 and asking about the Get Alarmed project. The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the grant.
