ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The owners of an Arlington yoga studio faced a strong backlash to a Twitter promotion they ran for their business that riffed on the Sept. 11 anniversary.
Frank Machnick, co-owner of Bikram Arlington, sent a tweet Thursday morning on his company’s account, “9 + 11 = 20% OFF! PATRIOT DAY SALE.” He pulled the tweet down after a wave of criticism that the promotion was insensitive to the somber nature of the anniversary.
In an interview, Machnick acknowledged the tweet was a mistake, but said he does not see it as substantially different from various sales that companies run over Memorial Day.
The studio sits less than five miles from the Pentagon, where 184 people were killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
