Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is suing the manufacturer of the exercise band that he says malfunctioned and blinded him in his right eye when it snapped as he used it this past winter.
The manufacturer and defendant in the case is the Hygienic Corporation, of Akron, Ohio. Reid is suing that company in Federal District Court in Nevada. Other defendants include Hygenic’s holding company and Performance Health, LLC.
The accident occurred on Jan. 1, 2015, and for months afterward Reid appeared on television clearly bruised and wearing protective sunglasses.
Reid is asking for at least $50,000 in general damages, but did not specify — and was not required to — the exact amount he was seeking. He’s also seeking punitive damages against the company, but did not specify how much.
