Unemployment in Arlington County rose above 4 percent in January, but the county still boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the state of Virginia.
Every city and county in Northern Virginia has a lower unemployment rate than the statewide average of 6.4 percent, led by Arlington’s 4.1 percent rate.
The rise coincides with a statewide increase in unemployment, and officials were not surprised by the increase. Ann Lang, senior economist for the Virginia Employment Commission told the Sun Gazette that the post-holiday season typically experiences higher jobless rates.
