11 services offered by the government that can be performed by private companies

The federal government could save a buck or two by practicing fiscal responsibility, and one test could help the feds do just that simply by consulting the Yellow Pages.

In a letter to House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), top officials from a host of groups encouraged Ryan to push strategies to reduce spending and increase revenue as he prepares to go to conference with the Senate on the fiscal year 2014 budget. The groups, including Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform and Morton Blackwell’s The Weyrich Lunch, suggested Ryan encourage privatization of many government services as a way to exercise fiscal responsibility.

“Implementation of such privatization policies and processes have helped national governments from around the world — as well as governors, state legislatures, and local offices of both parties here at home — balance their budgets, hold the line on taxes, create private sector jobs, increase government efficiency, and lower the costs of service delivery,” the letter, sent Nov. 13, states.

The letter goes on to outline several recommendations for the budget conference, including one titled the “Yellow Pages’ Test.” The test asserts that if a government activity is offered by a private company found in the Yellow Pages, it then should either be performed by a firm contracted by the government or not the responsibility of the government at all.
