Two police officers in Maryland were taken to a hospital after being shot Friday, according to authorities.

Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said the two officers, Bryan Snyder, 43, and Kristen Kowalsky, 32, were investigating a suspect, Dominique Lamarr Lewis, 25, at around 12:43 p.m., with dispatch reporting that a man had a gun. Shortly after the two officers arrived at the scene, Lando said the FPD received an “emergency traffic over the air” alerting the department that the two officers and the suspect had been shot.

“All three of them were flown by medical helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore,” Lando said. “At this time, we’re waiting on updates on their condition.”

The FPD notified the families of the officers of the shooting, and it is working to notify the family of the suspect. Dr. Thomas Scalea, the physician in chief of shock trauma, said Snyder and Kowalsky both are recovering from “torso gunshot wounds.” The two officers are awake and stable, Scalea said, adding that he is “hopeful that everything’s going to be OK.”

Scalea said Lewis was shot in the torso and “had to have some surgery.” When asked by the media if both the officers and Lewis are expected to survive, Scalea responded by saying he “hopes so.”

The investigation into the shooting is in the early stages, according to Lando. He said it is unknown yet who fired what weapons. The police officers were wearing body cameras, but Lando said the footage has not yet been reviewed.

Lando also said there is no “outstanding threat” to the community.
