Michelle Obama: ‘I went to bed’ before election was called

First lady Michelle Obama admitted in an interview published Wednesday that she did not stay up until 3 a.m. to see who won the presidential election.

“I went to bed,” Michelle Obama told People Magazine, when asked what the historic night was like for her.

“Yes, she did,” the president added.

Michelle Obama, who led a fitness and health initiative during her husband’s two terms in the White House, said she has never enjoyed watching debates or political events, including when her husband was running for office. Instead, the first lady said she approached the 2016 presidential election like she has every other one.

“You know, once you do what you can do, you know, then you rest easy. It is in the hands of the American people,” Michelle Obama said, adding that she shared her feelings about President-elect Trump during the campaign.

Michelle Obama said although her candidate of choice, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, did not pull out a win on Nov. 8, she will “stand by” the voters’ choice. She said she is committed to working “with the next administration” to “make sure that they are as successful as they can be because that’s what’s best for this country.”
