Potential Democratic presidential contender Bill de Blasio is heading to South Carolina, an early primary state, to meet with the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
De Blasio, the mayor of New York City, will attend a meet-and-greet at Donald Fowler’s house, according to the Post and Courier. Fowler served as the national chairman of the DNC from 1995 to 1997. He is also well known in Democratic South Carolina politics, leading the party for nearly a decade.
Fowler and his wife Carol recently hosted presidential candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., at their home in Columbia, the state capital. The couple also met with another potential 2020 contender, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, last week.
In addition to the meet-and-greet, de Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray will take part in a roundtable event and attend a church service in Orangeburg.
The mayor has not announced that he is running for president, but has not ruled out a run. He was in Iowa in late February where he attended a roundtable discussion and met with former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, also a Democrat. Iowa, which has a caucusing system, is the first state to vote in February of next year.
Voters in South Carolina will cast their primary ballots next March.
