Hours before Monday night’s presidential debate, singer Katy Perry announced on Twitter that she’d be “voting naked tomorrow.” No one was quite sure what the pop star actually intended to do, but most were guessing that it had something to do with promoting Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.
Perry’s nude stunt turned out to involve starring in a new video for Funny or Die’s “Everyone Vote” campaign. The video features her waking up (clothed) on Election Day, with popcorn and a lollipop in her hair, and heading to the polls as part of an effort to get people to vote as they are.
“Yup, I’ve briefly scanned the Constitution,” she said (no surprise there). “And nowhere does it say you can’t just roll out of bed and come to the polls in whatever state you woke up in.”
She rattles off a variety of pajama options that she claims you can legally vote while wearing, including a child’s onesie, kids’ briefs, a free XL T-shirt, and “The Scrooge.” Perry then rips off her American flag pajamas and declares that she will vote naked…and ends up getting arrested.
When she claims that she’s read the Constitution and knows that she’s allowed to vote naked, one of the police officers asks, “Did you read it or did you just briefly scan it?”
Of course she just briefly scanned it — which to be fair, is more than what many liberals do — and subsequently found herself in the back of a cop car sitting next to a naked Joel McHale.
“Scratch that. Gotta wear clothes. My bad.” she yelled out of the police car window at the end of the video. “See ya at the polls November 8th!”
Whether or not the video helps convince people to vote in the upcoming election — one in which many are particularly unhappy with their options, — we will have to wait and see. Perry did, however, at least get someone to agree that voting naked is better than not voting at all.
Following the release of the video, Madonna shared a nude selfie on Instagram naming it, “Voting series 1” with the caption, “Voting naked with Katy Perry!! Vote for Hillary. She’s the Best we got!”
So if you’re feeling down about your presidential candidates this November, at least there’s the Queen of Pop’s upcoming, and possibly naked, photo series to look forward to?
