The Colts weren’t happy about losing Sunday; the Redskins sure didn’t mind. It could help speed the process of hiring a new coach.
Washington will interview Colts assistants Jim Caldwell and Ron Meeks, the latter a former Redskins assistant, this week. Had Indianapolis beat San Diego on Sunday, the Redskins would not have been able to talk to them until next week at the earliest. Both would fulfill the requirement by the league that teams interview minority candidates.
Caldwell is being mentioned as a possible successor if Colts coach Tony Dungy retires.
Monday they interviewed Gregg Williams, the Redskins’ assistant head coach/defense, for the second time. The team also interviewed Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz last week. Williams is regarded as the front-runner by multiple league sources.
Caldwell, 50, has spent the past three seasons as Indianapolis’ assistant head coach/quarterbacks. He had been the quarterbacks coach the previous three years. He was the head coach at Wake Forest from 1993-2000.
Meeks has been the Colts’ defensive coordinator for the past six years, developing a unit known for speed and pass rush ability. Meeks coached the Redskins’ secondary in 2000.
