For the second consecutive day, the Montgomery County Police have announced an arrest in a decades old cold case rape thanks to DNA technology. Police arrested 54-year-old Joseph Nickens in connection with the April 20, 1981 rape. The man broke into a Gaithersburg home and sexually assaulted a woman, but the crime was never solved. Earlier this year, police reopened the case for DNA testing. A DNA match came back for Nickens, who had been convicted in California. Detectives worked with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office to locate Nickens, and their deputies arrested him on Nov. 3.
On Monday, police announced the arrest of a Hubert Allan Marlin, of Michigan, for a 26-year-old rape after DNA matched him to a 1984 attack near the Montgomery Mall.
