President Trump reportedly gave South Korean President Moon Jae-in a message for North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un when the two leaders met at the White House last week.
A South Korean source told CNN the message concerns “things that matter to the current course of action, things that have to lead to something positive for the US-DPRK summit.” Moon visited Washington last week to discuss restoring the diplomatic process between the United States and the rogue regime.
“I believe he [Kim] would be very, very curious about what my president [Moon] would have to say after his meeting with the Trump administration,” the source told CNN.
“President Moon has been clear and simple. Small deal, big deal, good or bad, something has to happen, the process has to be sustainable,” the source added.
The South Korean said Trump and Moon’s meeting reaffirmed that both countries are “on the same page” on moving forward with North Korea.
Although Trump walked away from talks with Kim at a February summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, after the North Korean leader demanded full sanctions relief for limited denuclearization, South Korean officials have said they believe Kim is still interested in negotiating. Kim reportedly thinks that “unless substantive things happen by the end of this year, the momentum will die out” for future discussions.
Earlier this week, Kim touted the testing of a “new-type tactical guided weapon.” The Pentagon confirmed Thursday that North Korea had conducted a weapons test but said it wasn’t of a ballistic missile.
