Two Americans were killed in a suicide bombing in Turkey that may have been orchestrated by the Islamic State.
The attack in Istaklal Avenue, a popular shopping area in Istanbul, killed at least five and wounded dozens of others, the Washington Post reported. The White House confirmed that two American citizens were among those killed and said it is in close touch with Turkish officials to end terrorist attacks in the country.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those killed, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said in a statement. “Turkey has once again suffered a horrific terrorist attack, and we remain steadfast in our support for our NATO ally and partner.”
No groups immediately claimed credit for the terrorist attack, but Israeli media reports identified the bomber at Sabash Yildiz, a Turkish national believed to be a member of the Islamic State.
The bombing was the latest in a string of terrorist attacks in Turkey. One late last year in Ankara killed more than 100 people.
“This vicious attack is the latest in a series of indefensible violence targeting innocent people throughout Turkey — Turkish citizens and international visitors alike,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. “These acts of terrorism only reinforce our determination to support all those across the region working to promote peace and reconciliation.”
