‘Flat-out wrong’: Ted Cruz says Schumer ‘must be censured’ for threatening Supreme Court justices

“I want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price,” Schumer, 69, said Wednesday at a rally for abortion rights. “You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

“I don’t say this lightly, but Minority Leader Chuck Schumer MUST be censured for threatening Justices by name on the steps of #SCOTUS,” Cruz tweeted in reaction to Schumer on Thursday.

In an earlier interview on Fox News, Cruz said he believed Schumer’s comments qualified as “judicial intimidation.”

“That is an unambiguous threat. Now, whether it’s a threat of political retribution, or something even worse, that’s not clear. But whatever it is, it’s judicial intimidation,” Cruz said, adding that he believes the comments are unacceptable. “The Senate should seriously consider taking disciplinary steps. When you have the leader of one of the two parties going to the steps of the Supreme Court, threatening and trying to intimidate Supreme Court justices, that undermines the rule of law, it undermines the judiciary, and it’s just flat-out wrong.”

Cruz is not alone in his calls to rebuke the New York Democrat. GOP Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri promised to introduce a motion to censure Schumer for his “pathetic attempt at intimidation of #SupremeCourt.”

“I would call on Schumer to apologize, but we all know he has no shame,” Hawley tweeted.

In the House, GOP Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona introduced a resolution to condemn Schumer. The resolution reads, “The House of Representatives condemns Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer for rhetoric that threatens two Supreme Court justices and incites public discord, and is not befitting an elected Member of the U.S. Congress.”
