I have to say that one of my all-time favorite people is Mary Carillo. She is fantastic as a tennis analyst, and she has grown into a fine reporter. Through her work as an Olympic host she become a world-class broadcaster.
So what great sporting issue did we talk about? Why dogs of course.
At this week’s Westminster Kennel Club 135th Annual Dog Show, Carillo will be making her second appearance as cohost of the show from Madison Square Garden. She will be joining a true veteran of the dog show circuit in David Frei — who will be working his 22nd Westminster show.
The duo will anchor six hours of coverage of the premier event Monday (8-9 p.m. on USA and 9-11 p.m. on CNBC) then the finals on Tuesday (8-11 p.m. on USA).
Carillo on the event » They asked me about doing the show and it took me about one minute to say, “yes.” I am a dog lover, I have had dogs as a kid and this is one of the most amazing events in all of sports. I know being from New York — and I have a place in the East Village where I think there are more dogs than people — this event is truly one of the most entertaining, athletic and fun events in sports, and each year we get families that tune in to watch the action and learn about dogs.
Carrillo on why she thinks the dogs are athletes » There is no question that these amazing animals were bred to work farms, to herd other animals, to hunt — they are athletes. They have a sense of power and grace that allows them to perform as athletes.
Carillo on broadcast partner Frei » He is a walking encyclopedia on everything about dogs. There are so many breeds and he is great at giving us history where they came from and what they were bred to do. We are taking questions from the viewers and we always love getting them from the kids who always have great questions.
