Trump says Melania wouldn’t cry if he was shot

President Trump appeared surprised that House Minority Whip Steve Scalise’s wife was emotional at the hospital after her husband was shot in the hip at a congressional baseball practice, quipping that his own wife would not cry if it happened to him.

Trump recalled during a Republican fundraiser Wednesday having met Jennifer Scalise at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where the Louisiana Republican was recovering from surgery in June 2017.

Scalise’s wife “cried her eyes out when I met her at the hospital that fateful day … I mean not many wives would react that way to tragedy, I know mine wouldn’t,” Trump said, according to Politico.

First lady Melania Trump accompanied her husband to the hospital, bringing a bouquet of flowers.

Trump also mentioned Scalise’s weight loss, joking that he wouldn’t recommend getting shot as a weight loss plan. Trump previously teased Scalise about his physical transformation at a White House event celebrating the passage of the Republican tax bill.

“He had a rougher year than most of us. But it’s a hell of a way to lose weight, Steve. Not a good way,” Trump said in December 2017.
