Newt Gingrich argued that Mitt Romney is too wealthy to lie as much as Gingrich claims he did last night in the debate, but explained that he preferred to debunk Romney’s claims online rather than in person.
Gingrich said that he didn’t want to “brawl” with Romney. “If the other guy attacks you,” Gingrich told Fox and Friends that his grandchildren told him before the debate, “just sort of smile pleasantly. [My grandson] and I talked about it: ‘what do you do when there’s a bully on the playground?’ He says, ‘look you got to smile, [you got to be] straightforward and don’t let them intimidate you.'”
Romney’s wealth will continue to be a focus of the campaign, to judge from Gingrich’s next attack on Romney. “Somebody who is as wealthy as he is, as well educated as he is, who’s been a governor — there ought to be some minimal level of honesty,” Gingrich said. He faulted Romney for claiming that he was “influence peddling” on the Medicare Part D issue, saying that he “[spoke out] as a citizen” on the issue.
