Axelrod: Americans ready for tax hikes

David Axelrod, President Obama’s top campaign strategist, argued that Americans have changed in recent years and now will approve of a president running on tax increases.

“I’ve often said to you, I don’t think the past is always prologue in politics,” Axelrod said on Morning Joe when reminded that campaigning on tax increases, historically, ends in failure. “What’s changed is, we had these massive tax cuts in the last decade that were skewed to the wealthy and it helped promote huge deficits . . . and the American people know that, and they know that they haven’t benefitted nearly to the degree that people at the top did.”

Axelrod said tax increases are coming in Obama’s second term. “The president is going to win in November and we are not going to extend those [Bush] tax cuts for the wealthy,”
