Passerby saves slaying suspect after car crash

A 29-year-old man was being questioned in the death of his girlfriend Sunday in Gaithersburg after he was pulled from the flaming wreckage of his car by a passerby.

Montgomery County police were seeking charges against the man, whose identity was not released. He is a suspect in the apparent slaying of his 29-year-old girlfriend. Police found the woman dead in her home on Harbor Tree Court in Gaithersburg just before 6 a.m. Sunday.

A few moments before her body was found, the boyfriend was driving at a high rate of speed through the area and his Jeep slammed through a fire station door and struck a parked ambulance, police said. It then careened across the street, hit a tree and landed in a ditch. The Jeep then burst into flames.

Another man, Hugh Bailey, was on his way to sing in his church choir for Easter Sunday when he came upon the wreck and pulled the driver from the car. The man suffered leg injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, police and fire officials said.

The girlfriend?s identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin. No charges had been filed as of late Sunday afternoon.
