Virginians can pack heat in places of worship in certain cases, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has ruled.
The official advisory opinion came in response to an inquiry from Del. Mark Cole, R-Spotsylvania.
Under state law, it is illegal for any person to carry a gun into a place of worship while a religious meeting is being held there “without good and sufficient reason.”
But Cuccinelli writes in the opinion that “carrying a weapon for personal protection constitutes a good and sufficient reason” for doing so.
The opinion also states that churches, synagogues, mosques and other entities can restrict or ban guns on their property if they so choose.
