Sun, shamrocks and soccer headline this month at RFK

Spring is so close we can taste it. So let the outdoor festivities begin — ShamrockFest kicks off the festivities this month at RFK Stadium on Saturday, followed by D.C. United’s home opener and a D.C. Roller Derby match later this month.

The annual St. Patty’s Day festival (not actually held on the holiday, we know) will feature 45 bands, including Irish rock band Dropkick Murphys, and DJs on 10 stages. Tickets are about $30 online. Forecast: 62 degrees and sunny.

United’s home opener against the Columbus Crew is the following weekend, Saturday, March 19. The opener marks the official start to the Ben Olsen era. Olsen, the youngest head coach in MLS, won eight trophies while playing for United including two MLS Cups (1999 & 2004). Forecast: 55 degrees and sunny.

Next it’s D.C.’s Rollergirls — the D.C. All Stars will take on the (Maine) Port Authorities followed by a clash between the league’s top two teams, D.C. DemonCats vs. Scare Force One, on Sunday, March 27. Forecast: we don’t know why the weather folks just don’t go ahead and hazard a guess two weeks in advance — when you’re only right half the time anyway, would it really make a difference?
