Why Prince Harry will probably invite Obama but not Trump to his wedding

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle contemplate their wedding guest list, commentators are wondering whether four famous Americans will make the cut.

Mr. and Mrs. Barack Obama and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Trump.

The Obamas probably will, the Trumps probably won’t.

After all, by virtue of their shared participation in the Invictus Games for wounded warriors, Harry and the Obamas have become friends. Michelle Obama and Harry recently attended a school event in Chicago and are regularly shown joking with each other whenever they are in attendance at the same event. By virtue of the fact that the Obamas now have more free time, it seems eminently possible that Harry will ask the former president and his wife to join in his celebration.

In contrast, neither Markle nor Prince Harry know either President Trump or Melania. In that regard, and seeing as Harry is not the heir to the British throne, neither protocol nor personal relationship would suggest that the Trumps should expect a request-your-attendance from London.

Moreover, there is precedent for why Trump shouldn’t feel hard done by: Prince William did not invite the Obamas to his wedding with Catherine Middleton!
