Man shot in Bethesda

A 53-year-old man was shot by a masked suspect as he pulled into his garage in Bethesda, Montgomery County police said.

Neighbors identified the man as Ashoka Mody, an employee of the International Monetary Fund. Police say the gunman was hiding in the garage when Mody arrived home Thursday evening. Mody is in critical condition. Police would not say where in his body he was struck.

Police are trying to determine a motive and the identity of the suspect.

Girl, 17, killed in Northeast

A 17-year-old girl was shot in the head and killed in Northeast Washington during an exchange of gunfire between two masked gunmen and a security guard, police said. Authorities are unsure of whose bullet struck Kenyetta Nicholson. One of the masked men opened fire at a security guard at the front of an apartment complex at 515 Edgewood St. Thursday night, police said. The security guard and the gunmen then exchanged fire. Police said it’s not clear whether Nicholson was a target or a bystander. Anyone with information should call Crime Solvers at 866-411-8447.

Bomb threat near White House

Police said they might refer a man to mental health services instead of filing criminal charges after he told a cab driver he was carrying explosives as they drove near the White House. The man, whom police have not identified, was riding in the cab Friday morning when he claimed to have a bomb, police said. The cab driver informed police who searched the cab and the suspect, and found no evidence of explosives.

Threat closes Fairfax County high school

West Springfield High School was evacuated and closed after a brick with a note threatening to bomb the school was thrown through a window at West Springfield Elementary School. The elementary school was briefly evacuated on Friday after police hovering in a helicopter spotted a suspicious package on the roof.
