Area gas prices below rising national average

Baltimore drivers might catch a break on this year?s gas price surge.

According to AAA?s Web site, the current U.S. average for regular unleaded gas is up to $2.306 per gallon. This price is up nearly 7 cents over last month, and more than 9 cents from last December, AAA reported.

However, Baltimore area drivers are getting a better deal, said BaltimoreGasPrices.com, a locally owned and operated Web site.

Jason Toews, co-founder of the site, said his prices survey shows regular unleaded gas averaging at $2.276 per gallon in Baltimore, about 6 cents lower than his survey of national price averages.

“Right now the U.S. average is $2.336, and one year ago today it was $2.189,” Toews said. “Gas prices have gone up 15 cents a gallon from the same day last year. Certainly Baltimore is cheaper than the national average, by around 5 cents to 6 cents per gallon.”

A reason for the increase could be stagnant demand for gas this year compared to last, according to Lundberg Survey Inc., a California-based market survey firm.
