A District man has been sentenced to nearly 38 years in prison for a March 2011 home invasion in which he struck two men and a woman with a crowbar, officials said.
Vernon Bunch, 42, was convicted D.C. Superior Court in April of assault, burglary, robbery and obstruction of justice charges, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
On March 20, 2011, Bunch broke into an apartment in the 2700 block of Jasper Street SE while a man and a woman were sleeping in their beds and another man was watching television in the living room.
Prosecutors said Bunch cornered the three victims and repeatedly struck them with a metal crowbar, yelling, “Where’s it at?” An accomplice was blocking the door, so two of the victims jumped out a second-story window to escape. Bunch then left the apartment, taking a cell phone and about $60.
One of the victims suffered a shattered heel and a broken back because of Bunch’s attack. Another victim suffered brain hemorrhaging, a broken back and broken ribs and continues to be plagued by memory problems, officials said.
